The Bed Alarm Clock

It looks like designer Florian Schafer has come up with a design for the ultimate alarm clock, this is definitely something that would make me get out of bed in the morning, the bed alarm clock.

The alarm clock isn’t actually in the bed, but on the sheets and it features a haptic touch sensitive alarm, with built in speakers and all the controls are embedded in the sheet.

The clock segments are thin and hidden underneath the fabric. They consist of silicone and give the emboss feel via a slat of EPS (electroactive polymer, used for artificial muscles). When activated by electricity, the slat expands and lifts up the silicon segment; giving us the embossed numbers of the clock.

Apparently you can even wash the sheet; the silicon segment and the EPS slat are fixed in a small case. The small cases are arranged on a platen. When you want to wash the sheet, you just remove the platen with the clock components.

It certainly seems like an interesting idea, and something that would get me out of bed in the morning, someone needs to start making these, as I would be able to get to work much earlier.

We have seen quite a few different concept watch designs here at Geeky Gadgets, the latest one if from designer Apostol Tnokovski, the Tick Tack Music Watch.

The Tick Tack Music Watch is designed for teenagers, and it features a built in MP3 player, and as you can see from the photos, the MP3 player controls are located under the dial.

It features a wide strap, and a funky blue watch face where the time is display on an analogue dial using a digital display, I think its a great design and certainly looks very stylish.

Here is a cool design for an iPhone charger from designer Mac Funamizu, the iPetals Solar iPhone Charger.

The iPetals Solar iPhone Charger is designed to be portable, and it can be unfolded into a flower shape, where each of the petals features a solar panel, which is used to charge the iPhone.

The petals can be folded away to make it more portable, and it can also be used as a dock to stand your iPhone in.

Very cool, i really like the design, I am sure some manufacturer is bound to pick this up as it would be a cool accessory for the iPhone.

The latest design from the guys over at Mint Pass, is this fun looking robot which plays your favourite tunes and follows you around, the Music Tank Robot.

The Music Tank Robot is inspired by Caterpiller Inc’s endless track system, and as you can see from the photos it features a pair of tracks that it uses to move around.

It is operated by remote control via a WiFi enabled handheld device or a PC, it detects the location of your wireless router in your house and then maps out the house layout with its built in WiFi positioning system

It certainly look like a fun gadget, lets hope the guys over at Mint Pass put the Music Tank Robot into production as this would be cool to have in the Geeky Gadgets office.

Are you one of those people who always gets asked the time? Then you might need one of these Sharing Watches from designers Maezm.

As you can see from the photos, the watch display has been moved 90 degrees, which makes it easier for other people to read it when they ask for the time.

Normal wrist watch is worn so that the numbers are visible at the front when arm is folded toward the trunk of body.

However, if through a slight change of turning the display board 90 degree, the intrinsic meaning of the watch changes.

The information of time that I read is the same as those of others just as they are mine.

The subject of sharing is elevated from physical dimension to behavioral dimension.

It certainly looks like a fun watch, it looks like it is just a concept at the moment, so you will have to use your regular watch next time someone asks the time.

Martin Emila’s Media Chair

I am so glad the following Media Chair from Industrial Designer Martin Emila is just a concept, otherwise I would be saving up to get one, as it looks like one of the coolest gadget chairs we have seen.

The Chair features a built in iPod dock, which is integrated into the armrest and also some speakers in the headrest as well as a projector.

The Media Chair is made from a hard plastic shell, and it features four telescopic legs, and the chair has a soft foam insert to make it comfortable.

I love this design, it is definitely one of the coolest chair I have seen, and would make a perfect accessory for the Geeky Gadgets office.

Rolling R1 Radio Concept

We have featured a few different radio which unique way to control them. Like the Rolling Cube Radio but this innovative concept for blind people designed by South Korean-born Il-Gu Cha allows you to adjust the volume and tuning by rolling the radio backwards and forwards and left to right.

An analog radio is one of most important product for a blind people. In the using a behavior of how people manipulated rather than burying all of interaction in to the product. So adjusting radio to the right station would require a new kind of manipulation rather than simply tuning a knob.

‘R1’ has designed for them to control the radio more intuitively. By using a wheel structure user can control the radio by physical movement. The ‘R1’ allowed users to turn gadget on or off and to control volume and tuning simply by physically rolling the radio forward, backward and sideways.

Functionally, by using bevel gear system, I could increase a tuning range more than four times wider than before. There were too many channels in a narrow display before.

The Solar Traffic Light

We are starting to see a number of more greener and energy efficient gadgets and technology being released all the time, like the new electric cars from various manufacturers, but it is going to be some time before we see more energy efficient gadgets in every day life.

Designers Cheng-Tsung Feng, Yao-Chieh Lin & Bo-Jin Wang have come up with a really cool design for a solar powered traffic light.

If you think how many traffic lights there are in the world, this certainly seems like a good idea, although it is just a design concept at the moment.

The Solar Traffic Light uses Discolor LED technology, which means all three separate colors, red, amber and green of the traffic lights are houses in a single unit, which would make it a lot cheaper to produce as well.

The lights are powered by solar panels, which are on top of the traffic light, which also act as a hood to protect the light from the weather etc.

I think it is a great design, and I am sure we will see something like this on our streets in the future.

This very funky portable Electrolux Fireplace concept starts off as a opaque ceramic and gradually turns translucent as it fire burns and heats the surface.

With a cool looking design this portable Electrolux Fireplace Concept is definitely one I would like to see go into production and beats anything currently on the market. Check out the video after the jump.

This is a new concept of a modern indoor/outdoor gas fireplace made of special kind of ceramic that has been discovered recently. When the fireplace is off the ceramic is of white colour and becomes transparent as the fireplace warms up, allowing the visibility of the fire inside. After the use, with the cooling process it becomes white again.

According to CrackBerry the inPulse watch, which is not being made for Blackberry as some sites are suggesting, the inPulse has been designed as an accessory for BlackBerry Smartphones.

It is designed to provide information when your BlackBerry is tucked away or while you are driving you will be able to read and view messages as they come in directly on your watch. The images below are just renderings and are not official.

because this smartwatch is designed specifically for BlackBerry, we’re thinking hoping that at somepoint the watch APIs will become available to BlackBerry app developers so even notifications from third party apps could be displayed. CrackBerry heaven!

The Sketch desk lamp, by Hung-Ming Chen of Swedish design studio Hommin and Stockholm designer Ninna Kapadia. Doubles up as a neat A4 sized lighbox perfect for those quick all important sketches.

Called Sketch and intended for use by designers, the lamp head twists upside down to lie flat on the desk.

If you like me and have ruined a few phone while mixing them with water. Then this waterproof bath phone might be the way forward. Unfortunately its only a concept at the moment designed by Ungnoh Yoon. Basically a large speaker phone it sits on the side of your bath and allows to to chat away in comfort. You will need a rather large area to place this phone on though.

I am sure there are people out there that cant even take a relaxing bath without the need to make that all important phone call. If your one then this your answer.

Folding Urban Bike Concept

Folding bikes have been around for a while now, here is an interesting concept from designer Victor M Aleman, for a folding bike where everything including the wheels can been collapsed, the Folding Urban Bike Concept.

The Wheel is composed by six modules, each one has a double pivot in the joints, this allows the wheel to fold and become smaller, the spokes are contained in the inner structure of the wheel, when you unfold the system, the spokes rotate to the center of the mechanism where it attach to the center of the wheel.

It certainly looks like an interesting design, mind you I suspect people like me would take quite some time to work out how to unfold it.

This concept projection wrist watch by designer Andy Kurovets, burns the time directly onto your wrist, only joking it projects the time onto your wrist.

The lasers are mounted in the strap and with the press of a button show the current time.

This innovative projection watch concept might be good as a concept but my arm is covered in hair and it does look a little tricky to read so I’m not sure how practical this would be in real life. But as a piece of jewellery or discreet watch perfect.

We love design concepts here at Geeky Gadgets, the latest one is created by industrial designer Matty Martin, the Punch Camera.

The Punch Camera is designed to work like any other digital camera, but it also has another feature that uses a series of pins that punch the captured image onto a piece of paper.

“This is a camera which was inspired by the loss of tangible memories. It is meant to connect both physical and digital while minimizing excess materials and the hardships in sharing images.”

I think this is a great idea, it certainly would be a lot of fun to use.

Designed by Alexandros Stasinopoulos this has to be one of the most original watch concepts out there. Shame it is still only a concept at the moment.

Created by Japanese interactive media artist Mio I-zawa. The tumor is equipped with a series of motors and pneumatic actuators which help the mechanical tumor pulsates gently when the CPU load is low but crank it up and get the CPU load high and the tumor’s air compressor is activated causing the lump of flesh to inflate.

Some of the coolest designs are when new technology is used in an old design, here we have the GPS Compass from designer Andrea Schoellgen.

The GPS Compass features a digital display that looks like an normal compass, you basically enter the details of where you want to go into the compass, and instead of giving you turn by turn directions like a Sat Nav, the GPS Compass points north, south, east or west.

I think this is a great idea, it certainly would be fun to use, it is just a concept design at the moment, it would be really cool if a manufacturer picked up this idea.

I cant believe nobody has thought of this before, designed by Hyuk Jae Chang, the Power Bridge turns the surge connector design upside down, and in doing so it hides all the wires and cables.

Although it is just a concept design at the moment, I can see some manufacturer picking up this idea, as it would be a great way to hide cables on your surge protector and keep everything neat and tidy.

Lets hope someone puts this into production as I would definitely buy one, the less wires you can see the better.

The Touchcolor graphics tablet concept has been specifically designed to help the visually impaired draw and paint. Using the devices rainbow picture to choose your colours the user can then apply that to the picture using their fingers and thermal art board.

The device differentiates different colours by generating varied temperatures using LED bulbs. The thermal art board then records the line, pressure and colour the artist is using to create the final picture.

I was never very good at playing instruments in school and really didn’t take it any further. But after seeing the world’s first human synthesiser I feel a huge urge to start playing again and the humanthesizer would definitely be my first choice of instrument. Check out the video after the jump.

The humanthesizer is a joint creation between Calvin Harris, Sony Music UK, and Bare conductive body ink. Which together have turned 15 bikini babes into a giant Arduino-powered synth capable of playing Harris’s track “Ready For The Weekend”

Each patch is triggered by one of the girls closing a circuit with her hands or feet — you can see the “wires” painted on their arms and legs if you look closely

The Art Lebedev Navigarius GPS Concept is a futuristic looking satellite navigation system, it certainly looks a lot cooler than the majority of the sat navs available today.

The Navigarius GPS Concept features a round touchscreen, a USB port and a microSD card slot, and cigarette lighter adapter.

Unfortunately it is just a concept so we will probably never see it in production, but who knows with Art Lebedev the do make some cool, if expensive stuff.

This Nintendo N64 DIY case mod takes portable gaming to the extreme. After collecting the required parts over a few weeks these DIY modders built the setup in the day. It’s still a little rough around the edges but you can see the concept idea.

The N64 is built into a PSP carry case briefcase and all parts were bought for a few dollars. The case has two player controller ports on the side and blue LEDs on the front to indicate the power.

Designed by Kyle Koch the iPhone document scanner is used to help Kyle keep copies of its class assignments. He found that taking pictures of documents by hand did work but the results could be blured. The iPhone document scanner measures 15.5 inches in length, 9.5 inches wide and 15 inches tall and with the use of Evernote software the results are now excellent.

This conceptual transportation is designed to help the user travel through their environment in a more flexible and natural way. The Exocar is constructed in such a way that allows you to enhance which ever way you want to move whether it be run, walk, roll or drive.

Moulding itself and adapting to the user’s body in either vertical or horizontal positions. As this is a conceptual design it’s a bit hard to see exactly how would adapt and it would be interesting to see a working model. But perhaps the designer Joshua Saling is already working on a prototype.

The Power Track integrates the electrical wiring into a skirting board or a similar wall panel. ‘AllPlugs’ replace conventional electrical plugs, then simply slot into the distribution system anywhere around the perimeter of the room, giving you access to power wherever it is required. AllPlugs are environmentally friendly, with options that allow users to turn the power off to one or several appliances at a time, by either a flick of one conveniently placed wireless wall switch, or automatically by smart plugs which detect standby states.

It took him an afternoon and $30 to make this. That’s a tenth of what commercially available trays cost. He basically had to assemble some PVC tubing and mount a tray.

We have seen a few different iPod and iPhone docks here on geeky gadgets, the latest one is a design concept from designer Sang-hoon Lee, the Stackable iPod Dock.

The Stackable iPod Dock is made up of round modules which can be stacked on top of each other to add new functions to the dock.

For example you could add a couple of speaker modules and a light, there is even an air purifier module, this is a really cool design and it would be very useful having a few different options to add on to your iPod dock.

Lets hope some manufacturer picks up this design.

Dyson Energy Concept

This funky bracelet concept designed as a solution to the ongoing problem of charging your mobile phones while on the move. Allows the user to create their own energy then charge their gadgets. The device surface produces electricity in the ambient air and stores it in a Li-Po battery pack which can be used to charge a mobile phone or other mobile gadgets.

Thanks to the Seebeck effect, the temperature difference between the surface which touch the skin and the other which is in the ambient air allows to produce electricity that is stocked in a battery. When the user needs to recharge a mobile device, he plugs it into the Dyson Energy through a micro-USB port (universal connector imposed to constructors in 2012) and can have some additional minutes in use.

Designed by Mathieu Servais, Camille Lefer, Clément Faydi, and Mickaël Denié third year students in Industrial Design at Nantes Atlantic Design School (France).

The Openaire is a hybrid laptop carry case which converts into a laptop work surface and chair. Consisting of a semirigid protective sleeve that unfolds to produce a desk surface for your laptop and mouse which sits on your lap.

The external detective shall then converts into a chair completing the Openaire office which you can carry with you.

Flippers or Shoes

The Amphibian beach shoe has been designed by Edward Shelton to help lifeguards swim faster towards any swimmers in distress. He designed developed and tested the flippers alongside the Royal National Lifeboat Association (RNLI) and Loughborough Lifesaving Club.

Wearing the shoe, lifeguards can run to the water’s edge and quickly convert the beach shoes into into flippers. The flippers have carbon fibre blades providing increased propulsion and a unique retraction system offering the lifeguard improved flexibility control and speed throughout the rescue process.

If needed the flippers can be detached from the shoes for extra comfort when a lifeguard is not on their shift. The fin module heel clip system can quickly be adjusted to fit sizes from 5 to 13 UK and holds the shoe securely in place and can be easily removed for cleaning and maintenance. They are constructed from 10% glass filled Nylon 66 body moldings which provides flexibility and spring when running but stiffness when swimming.

Solar Tent Concept

I’m not sure whether this tent would be on Ray Mears Christmas list but it’s definitely on mind. This high-tech Solar tent a vision of the future designed by Orange. Is constructed from photovoltaic fabric (coated fabric) which is specially coated solar threads woven into conventional fabric.

This synthetic fabric captures solar energy and converts it into power for your gadgets. The main solar panel’s move throughout the day to capture the sun’s energy and are connected to a wireless control hub where energy information is displayed.

The hub also controls the temperature of the tent and provides wireless Internet access. The groundsheet is fitted with a heating element to keep you cosy and warm on even the coldest night. It also has “glo-cation” technology installed which helps you to find your tent even on the darkest of nights.

Unfortunately this innovative tent is a new concept at the moment but I am sure it won’t be long until we see similar technology on the high street.

Check out this innovative design for anyone that is short of space on your desk but needs a drink close at hand. The DrinKlip attaches itself to a desk edge creating a neat drinks holder. It also provides extra anti-spill protection built in.

The DrinKlip was designed by Kim Hyun-been, who also holds down a full-time job designing mobile phones for LG Electronics.

I hate wires, and spend most of my time trying to hide them when setting up new equipment, but you wont need to do this with the Outlet Wall.

The Outlet Wall is made up of power outlets where you can just plug your cables in anywhere you want, and they form part of the display.

This is a great design concept and certainly gets rid of the need to hide wires away.

Here is a cool design concept from Andrey Chirkov, the Mouser Mouse.

The Mouser Mouse is a combination of two materials with different qualities and textures, a combination of warm pliable wood and cold hard metal.

It certainly looks like an interesting design, lets hope they put these into production as it would look pretty cool on anyone’s desk

The Salt & Pepper Cell Shakers are the latest design from the guys over at Antrepo Design Industry, and as you can see from the photos, they are designed like a pair of D size batteries.

They are made from a combination of stainless steel and glass, and the power indicators on the side, show the amount of salt or pepper that is left inside the shakers.

Although this is in the early stages at the moment, Antrepo Design Industry are looking to put these into production in the future, lets hope we see them in the shops soon as they would look great in any geeks apartment.

Here is an interesting design concept from designer Stephen Shepeleff, the Q-Sound Solar Powered Bluetooth Headphones.

These funky looking Bluetooth headphones feature a built in solar panel that will charge the built in battery.

This is a great idea lets hope we see this go into production soon, they also look pretty cool.

Check out this cool lamp from designer Karin Johansson, the Dynamic Lamp.

The Dynamic Lamp features a large globe that can be spun around by your hands, inside the globe is a dynamo which converts the kinetic energy into electricity and the light the lamp.

Whilst this is a great concept, I cant see it being very practical as you would spend the majority of your time spinning the globe rather than reading your book as the picture above.

Cool Concepts – The Digi Alarm Clock

Check out this cool design concept from designer Justyna Szacon, the Digi Alarm Clock.

The Digi Alarm clock is an alarm clock with no off button, when the alarm goes off, you have to lift the sphere out of the middle of the alarm clock and place it back to turn the alarm off.

The idea is that by lifting the sphere you are going to wake up, it certainly seems like a good idea, when my alarms go off in the morning I just hit the various snooze buttons, which I can now do in my sleep, so this might actually get me out of bed.

Here is an interesting design concept from designer Takemura Ori, the UNI Watch.

The UNI Watch features a customizable digital face that you can change the complete look of to suit your tastes, from the colour to the font, to backgrounds and even the time display.

It certainly looks like an interesting concept, the idea is that it connects to your PC via a mini USB port and then you can choose a customized design with the included software.

It even has a built in accelerometer that displays the watch face when you turn your wrist, this is a great design, and I would love a watch like this as you could change the design of the face all the time.

Here is an interesting design concept form designers Kfir Schwalb and Orit Magio from Studio Shulab Design, the Lightpot.

The lightpot is a lamps which features a plant pot as the base, it is designed for growing small plants and herbs indoors, and the plants are given light by the built in LED bulbs.

Looks like a great design, and would be a great way to grow plants and herbs in your apartment.

Here is another interesting concept design, this one is from designer Camillo Vanacore, the Nikon Coolpix Extreme Digital Camera.

The Nikon Coolpix Extreme Digital Camera is designed to work in any environment, be it snow, rain or really hot weather it is designed to be waterproof, dustproof, and shockproof.

It looks like an interesting concept, the design is pretty cool, I am not sure how easy it would be to make a camera that can withstand all the elements and still make it look that good.
