Cool Mods – The PowerBook Desktop Mac Mod

What do you do with your old PowerBook when it becomes broken and almost beyond use ? you turn it into this awesome desktop Mac Mod, like moder Richard Hunt.

powebook destop casemod

Essentially, the case is made of two sheets of white acrylic, bolted together by socket countersunk screws. I’ve used 15mm chrome pipe as the four spacers between the acrylic sheet. The perforated steel was cut to my specifications by a very helpful chap found on eBay. Cutting the CD drive slot was a little tricky, as was drilling the power button hole, but once done they seem to function ok.

I have to say this is an amazing mod, and it looks great, head on over to Mac Mod for full details on how Richard made it.

Pystar’s OpenMac Mac Mini Clone runs Leopard

Pystar has announced the launch of a Mac Mini clone, the OpenMac.

pystar openmac mac mini clone

The OpenMac comes with an Intel 2.2GHZ Core 2 Duo processor, a 250GB hard drive, 2GB of RAm, 4 USb ports and it runs OSX Leopard.

The OpenMac will go on sale for $399, it is basically a clone of the Mac Mini which retails for $499 and you can even order it with Leopard pre-intstalled.

It will be interesting to see how this develops, no doubt Apple will be suing Pystar, but according to Pystar they will fight it as they are saying that Apple’s EULA which doesn’t allow you to install Leopard on any non Apple hardware breaks US monopoly rules.

Cool Mods – The Apple IIgs Laptop Mod from Ben Heck

Here’s another cool mod from moder extraordinaire Ben Heck, this time it’s an Apple IIgs Laptop.

ben heck apple IIgs laptop

Ben wanted the laptop mod to look like a laptop which had been designed in the 80’s like the Apple IIgs, looks like he has done a pretty good job of it.

Here’s some of the specs.

  • Large 15? color screen. Much bigger than the ones on my other 8-bit computer projects (thus far)
  • Uses an original Apple IIgs motherboard with RAM expansion.
  • Custom acrylic keyboard. It uses the original keyboard PCB, but the buttons were custom made for a cool modern look.
  • CompactFlash adapter inside unit functions as an original equipment hard drive.
  • Glowing backlit “][” logo. Blue for on, with a bit of yellow during disk access.
  • Built-in stereo speakers.
  • Side port access for floppy drive, joystick and mouse.
  • Can play Arkanoid II!

Head on over to Ben Heck’s website for full details of this amazing mod, there is also a video worth checking out.

Cool Mods – Apple floppy drive amplifier

Check out this cool homemade amplifier, made with an old Apple 5-1/4 inch floppy drive.

Apple floppy drive amplifier

Apple floppy drive amplifier

Found an old 5.25″ floppy drive at a thrift store for $5.99. It reminded me of my Apple IIe childhood so I ended up buying it not knowing what I was gonna do with it. I’m a fan of anachronism and needed a better housing for my computer stereo amplifier, so decided to combine the two.

Head on over to Instructables, if you want full instructions on how to make your own.
