Hacker Adds Intel Atom Support To Snow Leopard 10.6.2

When Apple [AAPL] released the updated version of Mac OS X just over a week ago, it removed support for Intel Atom processors, which meant that anyone running Mac OS X on a Hackintosh netbook wouldn’t be able to upgrade to the latest version.

A Russian hacker by the name of Tea has released a patched kernel specifically for the Intel Atom processor, and apparently it is as easy as copying the patched kernel to the root level of your drive, and then rebooting to get 10.6.2 to run.

Apple Tablet Delayed Until 2nd Half Of Next Year?

We have been hearing rumors of Apple’s [AAPL] upcoming tablet for quite some time now, let last rumor we heard is that the Apple Tablet would launch in the early part of next year.

Now it looks like the Apple Tablet may be delayed until the second half of next year, the reasons for this are apparently due to changes being made to components, one of which is a 9.7 inch OLED display made by LG.

There are two models rumored to launch of the Apple Tablet, one with a 9.7 inch screen which may feature an OLED display and one with a 10.6 inch TFT LCD display.

As usual with all Apple rumors, this needs to be take with a pinch of salt, i guess we will just have to wait until we get an official announcement from Apple.

One of the games I have been looking forward to for the iPhone and iPod Touch, is Ravensword: The Fallen King, which is now available in iTunes from today.

Ravensword is a 3D role playing game with a main quest line and also a range of side quests, and according to the developers the game will take around 6 to 8 hours to complete, without doing any of the side quests.

Apple Wins Copyright Infringement Case Against Psystar

Apple [AAPL] has won its first stage of its legal battle against Psystar, who make PCs which run Apple’s OS X operating system.

This is the first in a series of legal battles between Apple and Psystar, and the case that was won was for copyright infringement, as Psystar was illegally copying, modifying and distributing Apple’s software code.

“Psystar infringed Apple’s exclusive right to create derivative works of Mac OS X,” the ruling reads. “Specifically, it made three modifications: (1) replacing the Mac OS X bootloader with a different bootloader to enable an unauthorized copy of Mac OS X to run on Psystar’s computers; (2) disabling and removing Apple kernel extension files; and (3) adding non-Apple kernel extensions.”

There are still more issues to be concluded in the trial which include, breach of contract, trademark dilution, and unfair competition, which have been alleged by Apple.

The Apple [AAPL] tablet rumors have been going on for quite a while now, and we are still waiting on news from Apple on when, they will release an Apple tablet.

A new Apple patent has been revealed today shows a tablet like device that uses a pen as an input device for hand writing recognition, the tablet was filed with the patent office back in July 2009.

An ink manager running at a computer system receives ink information entered at a pen-based input/display device and accumulates the ink information into ink strokes. The ink manager communicates with a handwriting recognition engine and includes an ink phrase termination engine that is configured to detect the occurrence of one or more ink phrase termination events by examining the ink information.

Upon the occurrence of an ink phrase termination event, the ink manager notifies the handwriting recognition engine and organizes the preceding ink strokes into an ink phrase data structure. The ink manager may also pass the ink phrase to an application executing on the computer system that is associated with the ink information, and it, in response, may return a reference pointer and a recognition context to the ink manager.

We have no idea if Apple’s still rumored tablet will feature this technology, but they must be thinking about integrating this into a tablet device if they ever get around to launching one.

Google Chrome Beta Coming To Apple Mac’s In December

Google Chrome is currently only available for Windows at the moment, Mac and Linux users have been waiting for a version and it looks like Mac users will be seeing a beta version of Google Chrome in December.

The current version of Chrome that is available on Windows is Chrome 3.0, there is also a beta version, 4.0 available and it looks like Mac users will be getting version 4.0 as well.

We realize this means dropping Mac support for a couple of weeks, but we already have people working on that,” Baum said. “If you prioritize the Windows and Linux versions, we’ll bring you cross-platform parity as soon as we can!

Getting Google Chrome on the Apple Mac is going to give it a nice boost, and is bound to attract a lot of new users.

Orange Sells 30,000 Apple iPhones On First Day

Yesterday the Apple iPhone became available on UK mobile phone network Orange, and it looks like Orange had a good day as they sold more than 30,000 iPhones.

According to Orange, the 30,000 sales of the iPhone is a new UK record for first day sales of a mobile device, and considering that the iPhone has been available in the UK on O2 for some time, Orange must be pretty happy with the launch.

Before the launch of the iPhone on Orange there were concerns of their data limits being imposed on the iPhone, but this hasn’t stopped customer buying the iPhone on Orange.

Vodafone is due t start selling the iPhone as well in the early part of 2010, it will be interesting to see what deals they offer to iPhone customers to lure them away from O2 and now Orange.

Both the current O2 and Orange iPhone deals are priced similarly, each company is offering different incentives to join them, I wonder if Vodafone come in with a cheaper price plan how many iPhone customers they will attract.

Some of our readers will remember the Commodore 64 iPhone emulator App that Apple pulled from their App store back in September, because users were able to enable basic on the application through a simple hack.

The good news is that the Commodore 64 emulator iPhone App is now back in the iPhone App store, and it has had a few changed made to it.

Manomio have obviously removed the ability to enable basic on the application, and other changes include a 30% performance improvement, as well as some new games which include International Tennis, International Baseball and International Basketball.

Lets hope they haven’t tried to sneak anything past Apple this type, and the Commodore 64 iPhone App will stay in the App store for more than a few days.

O2 Looks To Keep iPhone Customers With Free Offers

As of today, O2 is no longer the only mobile phone network in the UK selling the Apple iPhone as it is now available with Orange as well, and in a bid to keep their iPhone customers O2 or offering a range of free services and deals.

O2 have dropped the price of their iPhone Tethering data bundle to £9.79 a month, that gets you 3GB of tethered data per month, and if you sign up to the deal before the 31st of December, O2 will give you their O2 basic Home Broadband package for free.

On top of that O2 are offering iPhone customers 3 months free access to Sky’s New Mobile TV iPhone App which lets you watch sky TV on your iPhone, the channels included are Sky Sports 1, 2 and 3, Spy Sports Extra, Sky News, Sly Sports News, the package normally costs £6 per month.

This is good news for existing iPhone customers and new customers coming to O2, it will be interesting to see if Orange start to offer similar deals.

Apple [AAPL] has released its update to Mac OS X, Snow Leopard 10.6.2, unfortunately it looks like it no longer supports Intel Atom processors.

Snow Leopard 10.6.2 fixes about 40 bugs, which is good news for Mac users, but not Hackintosh users who are running Mac OS X on their netbooks, here is what popular Hackintosh user Stellarola had to say about it.

Well, looks like I was right, again. The netbook forums are now blowing up with problems of 10.6.2 instant rebooting their Atom based netbooks. My sources tell me that every time a netbook user installs 10.6.2 an Apple employee gets their wings.

If you are using OS X on an Atom based netbook, don’t update to Snow Leopard 10.6.2, there could be a solution developed soon by the hackintosh community.

O2 To Offer Official iPhone Unlock From 10th November

O2’s chief executive Matthew Key has confirmed that O2 will offer an unlocking service for the Apple iPhone, customers who’s contract is up will be able to have their iPhone unlocked for free, where as pay as you go customers will have to cough up a fee of £14.97 and will be able to unlock their iPhone after 12 months.

“There is absolutely no truth in that rumour. Once the iPhone becomes available on other UK networks, we will allow O2 customers to unlock their iPhones, although of course they will still need to honour any outstanding contract period they have. At the end of their contract period, they are entirely free to move to another operator – though naturally we hope they won’t want to!”

I have just spoken to O2, and they have confirmed that the unlocking service will be available from tomorrow the 10th of November.

If you want to unlock your iPhone with O2, to use on any mobile network, y0ur existing contract will have to be up, or you will have to pay the remainder of your existing contract.

iKee Rickrolling iPhone Worm

Last week we told about the Dutch hacker who had hacked a bunch of jailbroken iPhones, now it seems a hacker in Australia has created a virus that affects jaibroken iPhones.

The virus is called ‘iKee’ and it replaces your default background with a picture of 80s pop star Rick Astley, with the message ‘ikee is never going to give you up’.

The worm uses SSH access on jailbroken iPhones, where users haven’t changed the default password, once they virus is on the iPhone it will then scan the 3G IP range the device is on, and attempt to pass it on to other jailbroken devices.

It looks like the only users who have been effected are in Australia, but it could spread quite easily to other parts of world.

If you are using a jailbroken iPhone, make sure you change the default user name and password settings or you could end up with a Rickrolled iPhone.

8GB iPhone 3GS Coming to AT&T For Christmas?

The latest Apple [AAPL] rumor doing the rounds is that AT&T are going to be selling an 8GB version of the iPhone 3GS just before Christmas.

Currently the only 8GB iPhone available is the 3G, and the iPhone 3GS is available in 16GB and 32GB version, by launching an 8GB iPhone 3GS for $99, AT &T may be able to get customers who would have been interested in the new $99 DROID Eris.

As usual with all Apple rumors, it needs to be taken with a pinch of salt, mind you the BGR usually gets these things right so who knows, we may see a $99 8GB iPhone 3GS on AT&T before Christmas.

We told you a few days ago that the latest build of Snow Leopard 10.6.2 had blocked support for Intel Atom PCs, this meant that anyone using a Hackintosh netbook wouldn’t be able to update to the latest version.

Good news for all the Hackintosh fans out there, the latest build now supports Intel Atom CPUs.

The latest version is 10.6.2 10c535, so hopefully when Snow Leopard 10.6.2 goes live it will still have support for Intel’s Atom CPUs, although knowing Apple they may have changed things by then.

Apple [AAPL] has announced that there are now more than 100,000 apps available to download to the iPhone and iPod Touch from the iTunes App store.

iPhone and iPod Touch users are download apps at the rate of about 10,000 per day, which is pretty impressive, and it shows just how popular the app store and the iPhone and iPod Touch platforms have become.

The App Store, now with over 100,000 applications available, is clearly a major differentiator for millions of iPhone and iPod touch customers around the world,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “The iPhone SDK created the first great platform for mobile applications and our customers are loving all of the amazing apps our developers are creating.”

“The App Store has forever changed the mobile gaming industry and continues to improve,” said Travis Boatman, vice president of Worldwide Studios, EA Mobile. “With a global reach of over 50 million iPhone and iPod touch users, the App Store has allowed us to develop high quality EA games that have been a huge success with customers.”

Apple have said that they are continually working on the app store to improve search and add new features like Genius for apps, just a couple of months ago Apple reached two billion downloads from the apps store, I am sure they are bound to hit three billion downloads quite soon.

Apple Announces 100,000 iPhone Apps Now Available To Download

Orange’s iPhone Unlimited Data Plan Is Limited to 750MB Per Month

It seems that Orange, who are about to start selling the iPhone on the 10th of November are offering a so called unlimited data plane with the iPhone which is actually limited.

Rory Cellan Jones from the BBC has discovered something interesting in Orange’s iPhone terms and conditions, that data will be limited to 750MB per month, not only is data limited but some services aren’t included in the 750MB limit.

Not to be used for other activities (eg using your handset as a modem, non-Orange internet based streaming services, voice or video over the internet, instant messaging, peer to peer file sharing, non-Orange internet based video). Should such use be detected notice may be given and Network protection controls applied to all services which Orange does not believe constitutes mobile browsing.”

So basically you wont be able to use services like Spotify and Facebook messaging on your iPhone with Orange, which is pretty stupid, as those are the sort of services iPhone users want.

If Orange want iPhone customers, they need to re think their data usage policy, otherwise people will just stick with O2, personally I would have switched to Orange as I am less than happy with O2.

The only thing that lets the iPhone down, is the providers that carry it, lets hope that Vodafone comes out with a better deal when they start selling the iPhone next year.

UK mobile phone operator Orange, who will start selling the Apple iPhone from the 10th of November has launched its first iPhone app called ‘Orange Wednesdays’

The Orange Wednesdays application is available as a free download from the iPhone App store in the UK, and it brings the Orange Wednesdays cinema service to the iPhone.

Users can search for the latest films, watch trailers, and find out which cinemas are offering the Orange Wednesdays service, based on the location of their iPhone or you can also enter a postcode.

According to Orange, this is the first of many applications that they intend to launch for the iPhone.

Snow Leopard 10.6.2 Breaks Intel Atom Hackintosh’s

If you are running a netbook with Mac OS X Snow Leopard then you might want to hold off updating it to the 10.6.2 update when it is released as it seems that this version of Snow Leopard will no longer be compatible with Intel Atom processors.

In the current developer build of 10.6.2, Apple appears to have changed around a lot of CPU related information. One of the effects of this is Apple killing off Intel’s Atom chip.

It is not clear as yet whether this will be the case when Snow Leopard 10.6.2 goes live, I guess we will have to wait and see what happens.

Orange has today announced that it will be selling the Apple [AAPL] iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS from the 10th of November, it will be available in all Orange shops as well as online at Orange’s website and through the Carphone Warehouse and Pheones4U.

Tom Alexander, CEO of Orange UK, said, “The excitement for the iPhone is immense, and this is a great day for our customers, our company and our employees. Since we announced the iPhone on Orange we have already seen more than a quarter of a million customers register their interest on our website. We will be matching their enthusiasm with a 3G mobile broadband network that covers more people in the UK than any other operator, a commitment to deliver the best 3G experience on the iPhone and best-in-class applications and plans. Earlier this year we stated our ambition to become the destination brand of choice for high end mobile users in the UK. With the launch of the iPhone on November 10 we’re pleased to be fulfilling that ambition.”

Orange are launching a range of iPhone plans, and they are offering the 8GB and 16GB iPhone 3G models, as well as the 16GB and 32GB 3GS models.

Pay Monthly – iPhone 8GB, 16GB and 32GB models will be available on multiple monthly plans, with the 3GS free on all £45 plans and the 3G model free from £30 plans (both with a 24-month contract). For those looking for full all-inclusive packages, a new high end “traveller” offer with inclusive roaming call and data allowance is available at £125 month. All plans include unlimited** anytime, anywhere UK mobile data usage on Orange’s data network, which has the largest 3G population coverage in the UK. In addition customers will also get free unlimited use of the UK’s largest single public Wi-Fi network, BT Openzone.

They are also selling a pay as you go version of the iPhone 3G, for £333 if you top up the phone by £50, and any pay as you go iPhone 3G customer will automatically get 250MB of data each month.

We mentioned yesterday that Apple [AAPL] was launching an update to its Apple TV, the update is now live and available to download, and it has a range of new features.

Apple TV 3.0 features a completely re-designed user interface, as well as new iTunes features which include support for Genius Mixes, Internet Radio, iTunes Extras and iTunes LP.

“The new software for Apple TV features a simpler and faster interface that gives you instant access to your favourite content,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s vice president of Internet Services.

As well as lauching the Apple TV 3.0 update, Apple also updated iTunes to a new version 9.0.2.

Apple [AAPL] has changed its iTunes Store terms and conditions, and the new terms and conditions mention a forthcoming software update to Apple TV.

It is not clear as yet whether this will be a software update only, or whether we will see a new model Apple TV launch at the same time.

The Apple TV 3.0 software update will bring support for iTunes LP and iTunes Extra products, which will deliver bonus materials for movies, similar to extras found on DVDs.

“iTunes LP and iTunes Extras Products are usable only on computers with iTunes 9 or higher and Apple TV with software version 3.0 or higher.”

There is no word on when the Apple TV 3.0 software update will be released as yet.

Apple [AAPL] has announced that it will be adding support for Microsoft’s [MSFT] latest OS, Windows 7 to Bootcamp by the end of the year, and will support Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Ultimate.

Apple will support Microsoft Windows 7 (Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate) with Boot Camp in Mac OS X Snow Leopard before the end of the year. This support will require a software update to Boot Camp.

The update to Bootcamp is likely to come as part of a software update to Snow Leopard, and it looks like Bootcamp will only be updated to support Windows 7 in Snow Leopard and not on Mac’s running earlier versions of Mac OS.

The JVC XS-SR3, a new docking station from JVC can take either mini, nano, photo, video, classic and touch and has 2 2.5w cradle speakers with analog and digital external input. Its also claims that its the first iTheatre speaker system with built in Dolby decoder.

With its neat holding cradle you can swivel your iTouch to view movies or vertical for app use. Unfortunately and a big mistake in my opinion its not iPhone friendly for some reason. With the external input socket you can also use it for portable TVs, DVD players or gaming system.

Nokia Sues Apple Over iPhone Patent Infringement

Nokia is suing Apple [AAPL] and they have alleged that the Apple iPhone infringes patents forGSM, UMTS and wireless LAN (WLAN) standards.

Nokia have listed 10 different patents in their suit which include technologies which are fundamental to making devices which are compatible with one or more of the GSM, UMTS (3G WCDMA) and Wireless LAN standards, the patents include cover wireless data, speech coding, security and encryption.

Nokia are saying that Apple has infringed these patents since they launched the first iPhone in 2007, and with all subsequent models they have released.

“The basic principle in the mobile industry is that those companies who contribute in technology development to establish standards create intellectual property, which others then need to compensate for,” said Ilkka Rahnasto, Vice President, Legal & Intellectual Property at Nokia. “Apple is also expected to follow this principle. By refusing to agree appropriate terms for Nokia’s intellectual property, Apple is attempting to get a free ride on the back of Nokia’s innovation.”

During the last two decades, Nokia has invested approximately EUR 40 billion in research and development and built one of the wireless industry’s strongest and broadest IPR portfolios, with over 10,000 patent families. Nokia is a world leader in the development of GSM technologies and its evolution to UMTS / 3G WCDMA as well as wireless LAN, which is also demonstrated by Nokia’s strong patent position in these technologies.

The lawsuit has been filed with the Deleware District Court, it will be interesting to see how this turns out, whether Nokia actually have a case or not.

New Apple iMac Gets Taken Apart

We saw the insides of the new Apple MacBook the other day, now the guys are iFixt are at it again, and have decided to dissect one of the new 27 inch Apple iMac’s.

The new iMac features an edge-to-edge glass. This is different from the 4 mm aluminum bezel that surrounded the glass on the previous iMac. Hopefully Apple’s got some pretty strong magnets to keep the glass where it belongs. After upgrading the RAM in our iMac, we noticed the glass was slightly out of alignment on one side.

New Unibody MacBook Gets Taken Apart

Just a few hours after Apple [AAPL] released their new unibody MacBook, the guys over at iFixit have taken their screwdrivers to it and taken it apart.

The new Macbook features a 2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 3MB on-chip shared L2 cache, 2GB of RAM with the option to upgrade to 4GB of RAM, a 250GB hard drive, built in 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1 +EDR, two USB 2.0 ports, a mini display port and Gigabit Ethernet.

Inside the new polycarbonate unibody Macbook, the iFixt guys found an LED backit display with the same 1280 by 800 resolution as previous models, an integrated lithium-polymer battery, and a glass multitouch trackpad.

Mozilla iPhone App Coming Soon

It looks like Mozilla will be launching an app for the Apple [AAPL] iPhone, according to Mozilla CEO John Lilly “Mozilla will release an app to the iPhone App Store in the next few weeks. … It’ll surprise people”.

He also revealed that the AwesomeBar and Weave, which gives you access to store bookmarks and history will be part of the Mozilla iPhone app.

It will be interesting to see exactly what the Mozilla iPhone App does, I doubt it will feature a Firefox browser as this would competition for Apple’s Safari browser so they would probably not approve it.

It would be great to have a choice of different browsers on the iPhone, something I don’t think we will see anytime soon.

Apple’s New Mac Mini

Apple [AAPL] has update it’s Mac Mini with a new range which feature new processors and a choice of three different models.

First up is the entry level Mac Mini which retails for $599, it comes with an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.26GHz processor, 2GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive.

Next up is the $799 Mac Mini which comes with an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.53GHz processor, 4GB of RAM and a 320GB hard hard drive, both models come with a GeForce 9400M GPU and an 8 x SuperDrive.

The last model in the range is the Mac Mini Server, which will retail for $999, it comes with two 500GB hard drives, an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor 2.53GHz, 4GB of RAM, a GeForce 9400M GPU, and it also comes with Snow Leopard Server, although there is no optical drive on the Mac Mini Server.

As well as launching a new range of iMac’s Apple [AAPL] has also launched a new unibody Macbook, the good news is that the price of the Macbook will stay the same at just $999.

The new unibody Macbook features a built in battery that will give you up to 7 hours of usage on a single charge, it also comes with an 13.3 inch LED backlit display, and a glass multi-touch touchpad.

Graphics comes in the form of an NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor with 256MB of DDR3 SDRAM, there is also a Mini DisplayPort, built in stereo speakers and an 8x slot-loading SuperDrive.

The new unibody Macbook is available today from Apple.

Apple [AAPL] has launched a new range of iMac’s, the new models are available in two sizes either with a 21.5 inch display or a 27 inch display.

The new 21.5 inch iMac features a Full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080, whilst the 27 inch iMac features a resolution of 2,560 b 1440, and both of the new models feature new processors.

The new 21.5 inch iMac comes with a choice of either a 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, or a 3.33GHz Intel Core two Duo processor, whilst the 27 inch iMac comes with either a 2.66GHz quad core Intel Core i5 processor, and 2.8GHz quad core Intel i7 processor,

Both the new 21.5 and the new 27 inch iMac come with 4GB of RAM as standard with the option to increase this up to 16GB.

Graphics in the new 21.5 inch iMac comes in the form of either an NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor with 256MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory, or an ATI Radeon HD 4670 graphics processor with 256MB of GDDR3 memory.

Whilst the 27 inch iMac comes with either an ATI Radeon HD 4670 graphics processor with 256MB of GDDR3 memory, or an ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics processor with 512MB of GDDR3 memory.

Other feature include a built in iSight camera, and a mini DisplayPort output, there is no Blu-ray drive as rumored but the new iMac do come with a Slot-loading 8x SuperDrive.

New iPhone 3GS Can Still Be Jailbroken

The other day we reported that Apple [AAPL] was shipping their latest iPhone 3GS with a new bootrom update which would effectively stop the iPhone 3GS being jailbroken for the moment.

The good news is that according to Eric McDonald from the iPhone Dev team, any iPhone 3GS with the new bootrom can still be jailbroken, and that the new bootrom only causes a temporary inconvenience.

According to Eric McDonald the new bootrom interferes with the 24kpwn exploit that was used to previously jialbreak the iPhone and that it will only make the iPhone difficult to start up after it shuts down.

To reboot the iPhone you will need to plug it into your PC or Mac, so basically if your iPhone 3GS runs out of power or you shut it down it with need to be tethered for it to turn back on again.

This is going to make it more hassle for iPhone users, and may stop some from jailbreaking it, although I am sure it won’t be long before we see a permanent solution to this problem from the iPhone Dev Team.

Apple [AAPL] has added a new feature to the iPhone Application store that lets users purchase extra content through free iPhone applications.

Previously this feature was only available through iPhone applications that cost money, this is bound to be good news for developers who will be able to offer free iPhone applications and then let users purchase additional content for a small fee.

This is also good news for consumers who will now be able to try a free application, and then decide whether they wish to purchase additional content, without the need for having to pay for an application they may not want or need.

It is also bound to increase competition amongst developers, the majority of which will probably offer more free iPhone application to customers, and then make their money from the additional content.

It will be interesting to see how many of the current paid applications, are now offered free by developers to entice users to purchase the additional content.

Hard Mac is reporting that the next generation Apple [AAPL] Mac Pro may feature Intel’s new 6 core Gulftown processor, in a dual configuration which would give it a total of 12 cores.

Other possible specifications for the next generation Mac Pro include 8GB and 16GB RAM modules, with the option to have up to a massive 128GB of RAM.

It is reported that we will see the new Mac Pro models launching at the beginning of next year which would mean that Apple would have exclusivity for the new Intel Gulftown processor for a short period of time.

According to 9to5Mac, Apple [AAPL] is working on an FM radio App for the iPhone and iPod Touch, and apparently the FM radio application will be for current models of the iPhone and iPod Touch.

It looks like Apple will use the FM transmitter which is currently in the iPhone and iPod Touch, but isn’t used form Fm radio at the moment.

Apple’s iPods and iPhones have been able to receive FM radio signals for some time now. The latest generation of iPhone and iPod touch can even broadcast FM signal, for instance to a car stereo. The ability of the iPhone and iPod touch to receive FM signals has been used solely in the implementation of the Nike+ ecosystem to this point.

As usual this is just a rumor at the moment, so I guess we will just have to wait and see what Apple has up their sleeve for the iPhone.

It has been revealed that Apple is causing another Flash Memory shortage after purchasing huge quantities from the top tier makers. This is making Taiwan’s memory module makers to diversify their NAND flash supplies to minimise procurement risks.

Demand is expected to climb 81% this year and prices have climbed 14% on some modules already. As Apple is one of the world’s largest individual customers for flash memory, it has instigated shortages in the past but rarely for multiple suppliers at once.

iPhone OS 3.1.2 Released

Apple [AAPL] has updated its iPhone OS to the latest version, iPhone OS 3.1.2, which is designed to fix a range of bugs.

The bug fixes include a fix which resolves sporadic issue that may cause the iPhone to not wake from sleep, and intermittent issue that may interrupt cellular services until restart, and a bug that could cause an occasional crash during video streaming.

It is not clear as yet whether the update will fix the battery problems than many iPhone users have experienced since they upgraded to 3.1.

If you are using a jailbroken iPhone, you might want to before upgrading until there is an update that will jailbreak the latest version.

The iPhone OS 3.1.2 is available now from iTunes.

The founder of Digg Kevin Rose has been spotted playing with the a Digg iPhone app in London while attending the Future of Web Apps conference.

The Crave crew he was hanging out with tried to get more information but Rose was tight lipped and said “You’re not even supposed to know about that.”

The mobile version of the site includes iPhone scrolling, mini-permalink pages with the top five comments, and digging ability. It will be interesting to see how it integrates with the mobile Safari browser.

O2 To Unlock The iPhone After Contracts End?

Up until now, when an iPhone users contract has ended with O2, they have refused to unlock the iPhone so that it could be used on another network on the grounds that they have the exclusive rights for the iPhone.

As they have now lost the exclusive rights for the iPhone, with Vodafone and Orange offering it later this year, they cant really use that excuse anymore if a customer wants their iPhone unlocked.

According to The Register, O2 still haven’t come to a decision on whether or not to unlock customers iPhone’s at the end of their contract, here is what they had to say about it.

“we did not offer unlocking at the end of a customer’s iPhone contract as we had the exclusive contract for the iPhone in the UK. Obviously, that situation has changed… and we are currently working through what will happen.”

It will be interesting to see if O2 will offer the unlocking service to customers who have fulfilled their contractual requirements, or if they will leave their customers with an iPhone that they cant use, unless they are on O2.

According to AdMob’s latest report the iPhone no has 40% of the smartphone market, up from 33% in February this year. Dont forget that AdMob’s numbers only represent mobile browser share within AdMob’s ad network but it is still an impressive gain.

Breaking it down, AdMob’s has seen the Android OS pulling down 7% of mobile ads in their network, up from 2%. The webOS, which powers the new Palm (NSDQ: PALM) Pre, is responsible for a healthy 4% of AdMob’s mobile ad impressions. The Symbian OS has lost considerable market share, dropping from a solid 43% to just 34%. Windows Mobile’s market share also took a hit with only 4% of AdMob’s mobile ads finding their way to the platform.

Apple Buys Placebase Mapping Company

It seems like Apple [AAPL] purchased a mapping company back in July and nobody noticed, details have just emerged about the acquisition and Placebase produces a software API called PushPin.

Placebase’s former founder and CEO, Jaron Waldman is now working for Apple, and is part of their GEO Team, which obviously means that Apple are working on their own mapping software to replace Google Maps on the iPhone.

It will be interesting to see if Apple brings out their own mapping software for the iPhone, to replace Google Maps, and according to GigaOm, PlaceBase has a lot of features that Google Maps doesn’t, including customization and the ability to layer multiple data sets onto maps.

Apple [AAPL] has today announced another milestone it its massively popular iPhone and iPod Touch App store, they have now reached a massive 2 billi0n iPhone apps downloaded.

The news comes just five month after Apple announced, back in April that their app store had reached a massive 1 Billion downloads, and shows just how popular the iPhone and the app store is.

“The rate of App Store downloads continues to accelerate with users downloading a staggering two billion apps in just over a year, including more than half a billion apps this quarter alone,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “The App Store has reinvented what you can do with a mobile handheld device, and our users are clearly loving it.”

The iPhone app store has over 85,000 apps available to download and there are now more than 50 million iPhone and iPod touch owners worldwide, and 125,000 developers in Apple’s developer program.

O2 UK Lose iPhone Exculsivity – iPhone Coming To Orange

UK mobile phone operator Orange and Apple [AAPL] have signed a deal, which sees O2 lose exclusivity to sell the iPhone in the UK, and Orange will be selling the iPhone 3G and 3GS in the UK before Christmas.

This is great new for UK iPhone users, many who have been unhappy, myself included with O2’s customer services, and overpriced Phone plans, and now we will see some competition in the market.

Orange have the largest 3G network in the UK, and I am sure they will be able to provide better data coverage for iPhone users as many have complained about the quality and consistency of O2’s data coverage in the UK.

Orange haven’t confirmed any details on price plans or the exact date of the iPhone 3G & iPhone 3GS in the UK on their network, the only details they have released is that it will be later this year.

Apple Insider has received news that the new design for the latest Apple [AAPL] iMac was finalised in September and the Mac maker’s Taiwanese manufacturer have already begun production of the new Apple iMac models.

The new iMac range is rumoured to follow a similar design style to the relatively new Apple Cinema displays.

The new iMacs are rumoured to be slimmer and more compact and packed with more A/V capabilities than previous generations. But with Aesthetic revisions aside, the late 2009 iMac line should also debut several features previously unavailable to Mac buyers.

Unfortunately there are no details on the release date of the new iMac or price.. but we will keep you posted.

iPhone OS 3.1 Battery Problems

There have been a number of reports of iPhone users experiencing battery problems since the latest iPhone update, iPhone OS 3.1, with lots of users reporting the problem on the Apple Discussions forum.

Some users have reported that the battery seems to last about 25% less, than with iPhone OS 3.0, and some are even reporting that the iPhone is using as much as 10 to 15% of the battery power for every hour it is in standby mode.

It looks like Apple [AAPL} are taking this problem seriously, and their support team has been in contact with customers who have had the problem, and they are asking customer to enable a battery life logging tool, to monitor the battery usage.

Personally, I have noticed the problem on my iPhone since the update, and the battery at the end of the day is definitely around 25% less than before I upgraded to iPhone OS 3.1.

We would be interested to hear from any of our readers who have had a similar problem, to find out how widespread the problem is.
