Prosthetic limbs can get pretty expensive especially when it has movable parts. Jose Delgado Jr. Jose was born without a left hand and since last year, he has been using a prosthetic hand that costs $42,000. That is an insane price, but they cost a lot to make. It gets signals from the muscles in Jose’s forearm which allow the mechanical fingers to move like a real hand.
He wanted to see how a 3D printed limb stacks up against a more expensive one, so Jeremy Simon from 3DUniverse offered to print him the Cyborg Beast prosthetic hand made from ABS plastic, which only costs about $50 to print. So what did Jose think? Turns out that Jose is actually preferring the Cyborg Beast to his $42,000 limb.
Jose says that the Cyborg Beast is more comfortable and that it performed better. One drawback is that some pieces do break off due to the material, but printing it is easy and very affordable. Simon is working with Jose on printing a new hand, this time from a material called Bridge nylon which should be even stronger. We live in an amazing time, where quality of life can be restored for very cheaply.Filed Under: Technology News, Top News
